Child/Student discounts

Child up to age 5

Travel is free for children under 5 years of age accompanied by a fare paying passenger.

Child - 5 to 15 years

Children aged from 5 to 15 years inclusive (until 16th birthday) can travel on the child fare. Student ID cards are not required for primary and intermediate school children. Primary and intermediate students may request a MAXX Student ID Card through MAXX either via email or on (09) 366 6400.

NOTE:  Students undertaking study at a private training institute (e.g. language school) or a tertiary institute are not eligible for the child fare but may be eligible for the Tertiary Student Concessionary Fare Scheme.

Students - 16 to 19 years

Full-time high school students aged between 16 to 19 years inclusive (until 20th birthday) can also travel on the child fare, provided they are able to show a current ARTA approved MAXX student ID, or are wearing a recognised school uniform. Please note that there will be no exceptions to this policy - proof of school attendance must be provided at all times.

NOTE:  Students undertaking study at a private training institute (e.g. language school) or a tertiary institute are not eligible for the child fare but may be eligible for the Tertiary Student Concessionary Fare Scheme.

School Buses

The discounts mentioned above also apply to students travelling on school buses. For school bus timetable information click here.

Please check the relevant bus, ferry and train fares for prices.

Bus fares
Train fares
Ferry fares

Discounted fares are available on services contracted to the Auckland Regional Transport Authority and on commercial services where there is a Concessionary Fare Scheme agreement between the operator and the Auckland Regional Transport Authority.

Tertiary student discounts

Full-time tertiary students are eligible for a significant discount off bus, train and selected ferry fares.  The discount is off the adult cash fare and applies to purchases of tertiary 10 ride tickets and 7-Day Northern Passes. Please note that the tertiary discount does not apply to adult 10 ride tickets. Please check the relevant bus, ferry and train fares for relevant tertiary fares.

For example: if you buy a tertiary 10 ride train fare at $28.80 for 4 stages, instead of ten one way single adult fares at $48.00, you will save $19.20.

Try the Journey Planner to the left to see how much your journey will cost and which type of ticket is the best deal for you. For example for a tertiary student travelling from Norana Ave to Britomart 4 days per week, a tertiary 10-ride ticket will be a better deal than one way single adult tickets or monthly pass.

The Conditions of Travel apply to MAXX Student Concessionary Fares for tertiary students.

Concessionary fares are available on services contracted to the Auckland Regional Transport Authority and on commercial services where there is a Concessionary Fare Scheme agreement between the operator and the Auckland Regional Transport Authority.

What identification is required

In order to purchase tertiary discounted tickets or travel on public transport utilising tertiary tickets, students must show a valid Student ID card from their tertiary institution with a MAXX Student ID Sticker applied. For Fullers Waiheke Island Ferries, tertiary students must also apply for the Waiheke Island Tertiary 10 Ticket Scheme. Applications are available at www.fullers.co.nz. Please note that there will be no exceptions to this policy.  An adult fare will be charged to tertiary students if correct ID is not shown on bus, train and ferry services.

MAXX Student ID Stickers are issued by registered tertiary institutions within the Auckland region. These include the University of Auckland, AUT, Unitec, Massey University and Manukau Institute of Technology and over 180 private tertiary institutions. Please check with your institute for more information.

Tertiary students may request a MAXX Student ID Sticker through MAXX either via email or on 09-366 6400 if they are residing in the Auckland region and attending a Tertiary/Private Institute outside the Auckland region when enrolled in an accredited and approved full time tertiary course for a full academic year or enrolled for a minimum of 10 weeks in a full time course.
