Auckland's rail network is being upgraded to allow more frequent and reliable train services. At times there is extensive construction which can not be done while trains are running. On these occasions the tracks are closed to carry out these activities. The organisations involved in planning the upgrade minimise the impact on commuters, by doing this work in off peak periods, usually at weekends, on public holidays or at night-time. During these times buses replace trains.
Those involved understand replacing buses with trains causes some disruption and work hard to minimise the impacts wherever possible while balancing project safety and efficiency.
The initial upgrade work is due to be complete in mid 2010. Work on the electrification project will continue until 2013
