General FAQs about catching ferries

What bus and train connections can I get from the Downtown Ferry Terminal?

From the Britomart Transport Centre, which is across the street from the Ferry Terminal, you can catch regular bus services via Queen Street to and from Karangahape Road and the Western Bays area as far as Point Chevalier. You can also catch a train east, west and south from the Britomart Transport Centre.

Use the MAXX Journey Planner to plan your trip. All you need to do is select your departure and destination locations and when you wish to travel. The Journey Planner will advise which buses and trains you can catch from Britomart and provide times, fares and maps for your trip.

Around the central city you can also catch the Link or City Circuit buses. Link travels a loop connecting Downtown to Ponsonby, Parnell, Newmarket, Auckland University and Karangahape Road. The free City Circuit bus travels clockwise in a loop around key destinations such as The Edge entertainment area, The University of Auckland, Sky City, Britomart and Queen Street.

Can I buy food and drink on the ferry?

A selection of food and beverages can be bought on some ferries. They are fully licensed with both non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages available to buy. The food ranges from a selection of sandwiches and croissants to packets of chips and chocolate.

Do ferries still operate in very bad weather?

Most of the time ferries can sail even when the weather is bad. Sometimes very high or low tides, or severe fog can affect some locations. Occasionally ferry services may need to be replaced by buses to transport passengers at no additional charge. If you have any concerns or require further information please contact your ferry operator before travelling.

Travelling to or from Northcote Point

Do I need to follow any special instructions if I am travelling to or from Northcote Point?

Yes! You must tell a crew member on the ferry if you are going to Northcote Point, as this is a request stop only. If you are travelling from Northcote Point, you will need to stand on the wharf and signal the Captain as the ferry leaves the Birkenhead Wharf , just as you would if you wanted to catch a bus. In adverse weather conditions, it may not be possible for the Captain to dock at the wharf. We would suggest phoning Fullers on 09 367 9111 before you leave home, to check first.
